A Comprehensive Guide to Evaluating Stones for Faceting
Before submitting a stone for faceting, conduct the following evaluations to ensure its suitability and justify the investment.
1. Colour Assessment
Place the stone on white paper under household lighting and observe its colour and shadow. A faceted gemstone will appear as dark or darker than this observation.
If the shadow has no distinct colour or looks dull, the finished gem may lack vibrancy. Ensure the stone's colour is strong enough to proceed.
2. Clarity Evaluation
Examine the stone for cracks, inclusions, or flaws that might disrupt light or affect integrity during cutting.
Mark one side with an “X” and view it from the opposite side. If the “X” is obscured by clouds or obstructions, the stone likely does not meet clarity standards for faceting.
3. Internal Structure Inspection
Use a desk lamp at a 90° angle to your line of sight and rotate the stone to spot internal flaws like cracks or inclusions.
Place a finger behind the stone to distinguish true flaws from surface reflections. If uncertain about structural suitability, avoid faceting.
Our Policy
Following these evaluations reduces unnecessary postage, time, and dissatisfaction. Stones failing these checks, or further internal assessments, are generally unsuitable for faceting.
We only facet stones with the potential to yield beautiful, valuable gemstones that justify cutting costs, unless otherwise requested. Our clients trust us because we prioritize authentic value for their investment.
